Wrexham January Transfer Rumours: Who Do They Need to Sign?
If there’s one thing Wrexham fans have come to expect, it’s surprises… So, could we see Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny deliver a few belated Christmas gifts for the Wrexham faithful this January?
The Red Dragons are right in the thick of their first Championship season after back to back to back promotions, sitting 5 points outside the play-off places, and still within reach of achieving the unthinkable with back to back to back to back promotions.
A bit of shrewd business this January could help them do that, so let’s break it down - what’s real, what’s rumours, and what do Wrexham actually need if their Premier League dream is going to stay alive this season.
Where Wrexham Are Right Now
Wrexham’s season has been… very Wrexham.
They struggled early after stepping up from League One, losing three of their first five matches, then went on a nine-game unbeaten run, before hitting another wobble with defeats to Hull and Swansea. A late goalkeeper error against Swansea didn’t help matters either.
But the Boxing Day 5-3 win over Sheffield United felt huge. Not just because it was chaotic and will make brilliant viewing on Disney+, but because it pushed them back into touching distance of the play-offs.
They’re now five points off the top six. Close enough for Wrexham fans to start feeling the most dangerous emotion of all for any football fan… hope.
Which is why January suddenly matters a lot.
The Big Wrexham Transfer Talking Point: Josh Windass
If there’s one rumour that has genuine legs, it’s this one.
Josh Windass - signed in the summer on a three-year deal after leaving Sheffield Wednesday - has been one of Wrexham’s key attacking players this season. He’s chipped in with goals, big moments, and exactly the kind of Championship nous you need when the league starts chewing teams up.
But he’s now being linked with a return to Rangers, the club he previously played for between 2016 and 2018.
Reports say Rangers have made a loan enquiry for Windass, with his former manager Danny Röhl keen to bring him back to Scotland. The thinking is simple: Rangers need goals, and Windass knows the club.
From Wrexham’s point of view, this is where things get interesting.
They aren’t believed to be keen on sanctioning a mid-season exit. Windass is under contract until 2027/28, and he’s part of the reason Wrexham are still within touching distance of the play-offs.
So yes - this is a real rumour.
But it’s also one Wrexham can probably knock back unless Windass himself starts pushing for it.
What Wrexham Actually Need in January
Who could Wrexham bring to The Racecourse this January?
Here’s where it gets less glamorous, but more important.
Yes, Wrexham score goals.
Yes, Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead and Josh Windass can hurt anyone in this division.
But, in the Championship, attacking flair isn’t enough to take you to the top, you’ve got to be equally sold defensively and maintain control in midfield.
And right now, that’s where Wrexham look a bit short.
Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney summed it up: Wrexham’s front three will score enough - the real issue is what happens behind them.
They concede too many chances.
Their midfield can get stretched.
They don’t always have the energy to control games when things get frantic.
Matty James gives them quality on the ball, but Championship promotion pushes teams to the limit physically as much as technically. When games open up, Wrexham can look vulnerable.
So if they sign anyone in January, it shouldn’t be another Hollywood headline forward.
It should be:
A high-energy midfielder who can cover ground, win second balls and keep games tight
A defensive reinforcement who brings calm and structure when things start going wild
Who Could Wrexham Sign?
One of the more interesting links is Yang Hyun-jun, the Celtic winger who has been playing as a wing-back this season. He’s quick, direct, and would fit Wrexham’s system perfectly, especially with Issa Kabore out.
Birmingham, Norwich and Preston have also been linked with Yang, and Celtic were close to selling him for around £3m in the summer - so he wouldn’t break the bank.
Other players who have been pointed out as potentially worthwhile signings for Wrexham include:
Carlton Morris (Derby) - a goal-scoring forward
Teden Mengi (Luton) - a young, Premier League-experienced centre-back
Gustavo Hamer (Sheffield United) - a creative midfielder
Bobby Clark (Derby, on loan) - a potential midfield boost
Sam Byram (Leeds) - experienced wing-back cover
But there’s a big caveat.
Phil Parkinson has already said Wrexham are focused on stability, not a January overhaul. After spending around £30m in the summer and signing 13 new players, the club believes continuity is a big part of why they’re in the top half at all.
Several injured players - including Kabore, Cannon, Ward and Elliot Lee - are also due back, which gives Wrexham more depth without touching the market.
Could Anyone Else Leave?
Windass is the only real departure rumour right now.
And Wrexham are in a strong position with him. He’s under contract, he’s playing regularly, and the club is chasing promotion. There’s no financial or footballing need to let him go.
Unless Rangers throw something ridiculous at them, this feels more like noise than a deal.
So… What Does a “Good” January Look Like for Wrexham?
In summary:
Keep Josh Windass
Add energy to midfield
Add stability at the back
Let the returning injured players do the rest
If Wrexham do that, there’s no reason why they can’t stay in the play-off picture.
However, if they lose a key attacker before the season’s out without replacing the underlying problems behind the forward line, things could unravel quickly.
The Championship is unpredictable like that.
And that’s why the January transfer window matters.
